The Kazakh government has recently taken many measures to boost tourism and FDI into Kazakhstan, the chief among which has been the relaxation of the visa regime.

On June 12th, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced at the Foreign Investors’ Council that citizens from FDI providing states will be allowed to enter freely into the country. From July 15th, citizens of major investors like the U.S., U.K., France, etc could travel to Kazakhstan visa-free.

Kazakhstan is also aiming to grow its tourism, and move the focus and FDI away from its extractive industries. Between 2001 and 2012, Kazakhstan doubled its tourism earnings, with more than 3.3 million tourists entering Kazakhstan in 2010, up from around 1 milion tourists in 2000.

Experts say that Kazakhstan will benefit even more if it opens the visa- waiver to middle income countries like Turkey that enjoy strong cultural and business ties with Kazakhstan

New Five-Year Visas to be Issued to American Citizens Starting Aug. 1

On August 1, Ambassador Kairat Umarov gave Kazakhstan’s first five-year visa to Congressman Eni Faleomavaega, who plans to visit Kazakhstan in August.

Anyone applying for diplomatic, official, private, tourist, business and student visas can now get visas with a maximum validity of five-years on a bilateral basis between Kazakhstan and the U.S. The fee for the long term, multiple entry visa is $160. The new visa will benefit frequent travelers to Kazakhstan.

The five-year visa is one of the main outcomes of the recent visit of Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Erlan Idrisov to the U.S. The Kazakh Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General in New York will issue the new visas to U.S. citizens. All other Kazakh missions around the world can also issue 5-year visas to American citizens visiting Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is the first CIS country to introduce a more liberal visa regime for American citizens, which is yet another sign of the growing relationship between Kazakhstan and U.S.
