Columbia University-KazNU: The launch of Global Classroom Program

Gazeta KZ, Sept 29, 2011

In September 2011 a new program entitled “Integrated Approaches to Sustainable Development Practice” – “Global Classroom” initiative – was successfully launched. This is a joint initiative between the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Al Farabi Kazakh National University.

The “Global Classroom” initiative, which Professor Jeffrey Sachs (Columbia University) developed in coordination with John McArthur and the members of the International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice supported by the MacArthur Foundation, was first launched in January 2008. KazNU became a 24th institution to join this program (as of summer 2011) and the first educational institution in Central Asia to join the Global Classroom initiative.

This course aims to provide students with a general introduction to the basic core competencies and practical skills required of a “generalist” development practitioner and government policy-maker. Students around the world are offered the opportunity to learn about the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and other sustainable development issues from some of the world’s best-known development experts, who are invited to make presentations at the Earth Institute at Columbia University.

Upon successful completion of the course and all requirements, students will receive a certificate.
